Panic broke out at the Government Primary School in Mugalolli Lambani Tanda of Bagalkote district on September 2, 2026, when a concrete portion of the classroom ceiling collapsed during regular class hours. Six students from Classes 5 and 6 sustained minor injuries and were immediately rushed to the Bagalkote District Hospital for medical treatment. Education officials confirmed that all affected children received prompt medical aid and are currently out of danger.
Following widespread public concern and protests from parents over dilapidated infrastructure, the Karnataka Lokayukta took suo motu cognisance of the incident on September 4. Lokayukta Justice B.S. Patil directed the Lokayukta police wing to carry out random inspections of government primary schools across Bagalkote district and submit a comprehensive infrastructure evaluation report. In addition, notices were issued to senior officials from the Department of School Education and Literacy, ordering them to conduct an immediate structural safety audit covering school premises, drinking water facilities, and building integrity.
In response to the mishap, the Bagalkote District Administration suspended the school's Headmaster and a Junior Engineer from the Panchayat Raj Engineering Department for negligence. Local authorities announced that 9,449 classrooms across the district will undergo a mandatory re-assessment by engineering teams. Affected students are being temporarily relocated to a nearby Karnataka Public School to ensure uninterrupted learning while structural repairs and new classroom constructions commence.
