Bengaluru Records Highest September Temperature in a Decade Amid Deficit Rainfall

Bengaluru experienced unusually warm weather on Saturday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) recording a maximum temperature of 32.6°C at its primary city observatory. Meanwhile, the weather observatory at Kempegowda International Airport touched 33.9°C. According to IMD officials, the 32.6°C reading marks the highest temperature recorded in Bengaluru during the month of September in over ten years, while the airport reading exceeded all September records since 1951. Meteorologists noted that the city has consistently recorded temperatures between 31°C and 32°C over the past week. The unusual thermal surge is primarily driven by a significant rainfall deficit of 232 mm during the current monsoon season, combined with an absence of cloud cover and dry surface winds blowing from the north-west instead of seasonal south-westerly winds. Although the atmospheric conditions feel oppressive to residents across the capital, IMD officials clarified that technical thresholds for a formal heatwave declaration have not been met. Nevertheless, the prolonged dry spell and elevated daytime temperatures continue to impact energy consumption and daily routines in the urban center, as citizens eagerly await late-monsoon showers.
