Bengaluru is embarking on a significant urban development initiative with a comprehensive ₹450 crore redevelopment plan for a 17-kilometer stretch of its crucial Outer Ring Road (ORR), spanning from Silk Board Junction to K.R. Puram. This ambitious project, spearheaded by Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. (B-SMILE) under the direction of the Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, aims to transform the heavily congested corridor into a state-of-the-art multimodal transportation hub.
The revamped ORR will feature dedicated bus lanes and cycle tracks to promote sustainable commuting options and reduce reliance on private vehicles. Beyond just vehicular movement, the plan emphasizes creating integrated and user-friendly spaces. A key innovation involves creatively utilizing the areas beneath flyovers at six major junctions, converting them into vibrant community spaces. These repurposed areas are envisioned to include seating lounges, local markets, vending zones, game courts, and even a 'gig hub' – a dedicated facility for delivery workers offering amenities like shaded seating, Wi-Fi, charging points, and water stations.
The project also includes significant upgrades to existing infrastructure such as wider, well-paved footpaths, improved stormwater drainage systems, modern street lighting, and enhanced signage. Stakeholder consultations have been actively sought, reflecting a participatory approach to urban planning. While the project is set to enhance overall urban mobility, pedestrian safety, and public convenience, it also aims to set a new benchmark for infrastructure development in Bengaluru by fostering a more organized and accessible urban environment.
