Christian Delegation Meets Mallikarjun Kharge, Urges Repeal of Anti-Conversion Law in Karnataka

A delegation of Christian community leaders from Karnataka, led by Archbishop of Bangalore Dr. Peter Machado, met All-India Congress Committee (AICC) President and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, on September 14, 2026, in Bengaluru. The delegation formally submitted a memorandum outlining four major demands aimed at addressing legislative, political, and socio-economic concerns affecting the community across Karnataka. Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge was also present during the high-level meeting held at the AICC chief's residence. The primary request presented by the delegation was the complete repeal of the Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Act, 2021, widely known as the Anti-Conversion Bill. The leaders voiced deep apprehension that key provisions of the law create scope for intimidation and impinge upon the constitutional freedom to practice and propagate one's faith. Beyond legislative repeal, the delegation appealed for political and socio-economic empowerment. They urged the Congress leadership to nominate a representative from the Christian community to the Karnataka Legislative Council to ensure effective policy articulation. Additionally, the leaders pressed for a dedicated 1% reservation for Christians under the Backward Class category to improve access to higher education and employment opportunities, as well as proportionate representation on state-run boards, corporations, and statutory commissions. Mallikarjun Kharge assured the delegation that their concerns would be discussed thoroughly with the state government leadership.
