Cyber Investigators Uncover Autonomous AI-Driven Ransomware Attack Executed in 10 Hours

Cybersecurity research team Unit 42, a division of Palo Alto Networks, published an in-depth investigation revealing a real-world enterprise cyberattack where a threat actor successfully deployed autonomous AI agents to conduct a full-scale network breach in less than 10 hours. The investigation demonstrates how modern generative AI and agentic frameworks are accelerating the speed and impact of cyber intrusions. According to the report, the attacker utilized frontier AI models and specialized execution loops to automate the entire attack lifecycle. Rather than relying on novel zero-day vulnerabilities, the AI agents systematically deployed over 50 MITRE ATT&CK techniques. Within hours of gaining initial access, the automated agents mapped the victim's internal network architecture, raided source code repositories, seized administrator root credentials, and triggered unauthorized continuous integration builds. Furthermore, the agents obtained master keys to the organization's cloud AI infrastructure and generated an automated 80-page technical audit report detailing all exploited vulnerabilities.
