Government Constitutes High-Level Study Group to Bolster Indian Cinema and Modernize Infrastructure

In a significant move to propel the Indian film industry onto the global stage, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting recently announced the formation of a high-level study group, to be chaired by Prasar Bharati CEO Prasoon Joshi. This strategic initiative aims to thoroughly examine both the opportunities and challenges confronting Indian cinema, with a mandate to propose concrete measures for strengthening the sector and enhancing its international competitiveness. A crucial aspect of the group's agenda includes encouraging the widespread adoption of cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and virtual production in filmmaking. These technologies promise to revolutionize various stages of film production, from pre-visualization and content creation to post-production and distribution, potentially reducing costs and accelerating production timelines while enabling more sophisticated visual effects and immersive storytelling. The committee will also explore avenues for improving filmmakers' access to institutional finance and alternative funding options, addressing persistent challenges in securing capital for production and distribution. Furthermore, it is tasked with identifying best practices across states and recommending a comprehensive policy framework for the industry's long-term sustainable growth. Complementing this, the Ministry has also introduced Model State Cinema Regulations, designed to standardize and simplify the approval processes for establishing new cinema halls. This is expected to mitigate delays and encourage investment in cinema infrastructure, particularly in underserved small towns and rural areas, thereby increasing screen density and broadening audience access to films. The study group is expected to engage with stakeholders nationwide and submit its report within three months, laying the groundwork for a more robust and technologically advanced Indian film ecosystem.
