India's electric vehicle (EV) sector recorded significant growth in August 2026, registering a 51% year-on-year surge in overall sales, according to official Vahan dashboard data. The expansion was propelled primarily by robust consumer demand across electric passenger cars and two-wheelers. Electric four-wheeler registrations reached 30,325 units during the month, up from 17,000 units during the same period last year, demonstrating accelerating adoption of battery-operated private transport across urban centers.
Tata Motors continued to maintain its dominance in the electric passenger vehicle segment with 12,983 registrations, securing a market share of nearly 43%. Mahindra & Mahindra followed with 6,367 units, while JSW MG Motor reported strong numbers with 4,568 registrations. In the electric two-wheeler segment, total sales among top listed OEMs crossed 1,60,000 units, representing a 69% year-on-year growth. Legacy vehicle manufacturers including Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor Company posted significant gains, recording YoY growth rates of 235% and 91% respectively.
Despite strong annual figures, sequential EV sales experienced a 12% dip compared to July 2026. Industry experts attributed this month-on-month moderation to reduced operating days at Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) caused by regional festival holidays such as Onam and Rakshabandhan. Nevertheless, electric vehicle adoption rates remain elevated, with overall EV market penetration holding strong across two-wheeler and commercial categories as automakers continue expanding production capacity across the nation.
