India Welcomes New Zealand Legislation Implementing Free Trade Pact

India has officially welcomed the passage of key domestic legislation by the Parliament of New Zealand on September 16, 2026, aimed at implementing the bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed between the two countries in April 2026. The Commerce and Industry Ministry announced that the legislative clearance represents a critical milestone towards bringing the trade deal into force, underscoring the expanding economic cooperation between India and New Zealand following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's bilateral visit earlier this year. Under the terms of the agreement, New Zealand will provide duty-free market access to 100 percent of Indian exports from the date of the FTA's entry into force. This tariff elimination is expected to deliver significant export opportunities for Indian manufacturing and agricultural sectors, including textiles and apparel, leather and footwear, engineering products, pharmaceuticals, and processed food items. In return, India will grant preferential market access for specific New Zealand commodities, such as wood, wool, sheep meat, and raw hides. Beyond merchandise trade, the agreement establishes structured frameworks for services, cross-border investments, and professional mobility. It aims to facilitate up to $20 billion in investment into India while enhancing pathways for Indian professionals, skilled workers, and students in New Zealand. Both governments are now finalizing remaining administrative protocols to expedite the formal commencement of the trade pact.
