In a significant move to support farmers grappling with drought, the Karnataka government has directed crop insurance companies to promptly release claims in affected areas. This decision, announced after a high-level meeting in Bengaluru on August 14, 2026, specifically allows the invocation of the mid-season adversity clause to facilitate settlements. A separate order has been issued for Belagavi district, targeting 23 gram panchayats in Ramdurg and six in Yaragatti taluk, focusing on green gram and black gram crops that have suffered extensive damage due to insufficient rainfall.
The government's directive comes amidst mounting concerns over a severe rainfall deficit across the state, with various ministers acknowledging the looming drought threat and urging swift action. Deputy Chief Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara, in a statement on August 11, had already instructed insurance companies to expedite compensation payments to farmers without delay. Similarly, Minister Priyank Kharge highlighted the 75% rainfall deficit and discussed measures for crop insurance.
District-level monitoring committees, headed by the respective Deputy Commissioners, will be responsible for coordinating with insurance providers to ensure the smooth and timely processing of these claims. This proactive measure by the state government aims to provide crucial financial relief to thousands of farmers facing severe crop losses and economic hardship. The decision underscores the government's commitment to farmer welfare and its efforts to mitigate the impact of adverse climatic conditions on the agricultural sector.
