Karnataka Government Launches Village-Level Water Budgeting Across 4,565 Villages

In response to worsening rainfall deficits and expanding drought conditions across rural areas, the Karnataka government has launched a village-level water budgeting initiative covering 4,565 villages. Spearheaded by the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) Department, the program scientifically assesses available water resources against present and projected demand for domestic, agricultural, and industrial sectors across rural habitations. The initiative aims to transition the state from reactive crisis management to proactive conservation, enabling local Panchayats to anticipate water stress before borewells, open wells, and reservoirs dry up. By conducting local hydrologic assessments, authorities can plan crop cycles, regulate groundwater usage, and prevent acute drinking water shortages during lean rainfall months. Karnataka holds the second-largest extent of drought-prone land in India after Rajasthan, making long-term water management critical for its rural population of nearly 4.5 crore residents. The project was recently highlighted at the National Summit on Sustainable Water Resources in New Delhi as an innovative governance model. State officials confirmed that water budgeting will gradually be extended to cover all 26,589 villages in Karnataka to strengthen rural climate resilience.
