The Karnataka government, under Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, has unveiled a unique initiative named 'Walls of Gratitude' to acknowledge and honor citizens who voluntarily cede their land for public development projects. This groundbreaking program aims to transform the often contentious process of land acquisition into a more collaborative endeavor by publicly commemorating the sacrifices made by individuals. The announcement was made during the inauguration of the newly named S.M. Krishna Road in Bengaluru, a key 11-kilometer stretch that forms part of the ambitious 123-kilometer Bengaluru Business Corridor.
Under this initiative, the names of landowners who willingly contribute their properties for essential infrastructure like industrial areas, schools, lakes, and vital road networks will be permanently inscribed on memorial walls. The first such 'Wall of Gratitude' has already been established along the S.M. Krishna Road, marking the beginning of this statewide recognition program. The government's objective is to foster transparency and respect for those whose contributions enable significant regional growth, moving away from traditional, often conflict-ridden land acquisition methods. By formally recognizing these civic contributions, Karnataka seeks to set a precedent for more inclusive urban and rural development, ensuring that individual sacrifices are not overlooked in the pursuit of collective progress. This strategic move is expected to streamline project timelines for critical infrastructure and promote a greater sense of community welfare.
