Three Officials Suspended After School Classroom Ceiling Collapses in Mugaloli Tanda, Bagalkote Taluk

Following the partial collapse of a classroom ceiling at the Government Higher Primary School in Mugaloli Tanda in Bagalkote taluk on September 2, 2026, the Karnataka government suspended three key officials for gross negligence and dereliction of duty. Those suspended include in-charge headmaster C.B. Helavar, alongside Assistant Executive Engineer S.M. Revadi and Junior Engineer S.M. Sanganal of the Panchayat Raj Engineering Department. The mishap occurred during regular classroom hours when plaster and concrete fragments unexpectedly peeled off the ceiling and fell onto students. Around six to eight children sustained minor injuries and were immediately rushed to the Bagalkote district hospital for medical treatment. Following the incident, officials from the Karnataka Lokayukta conducted an emergency spot inspection at the school premises and registered a suo motu case to probe infrastructure oversights. Investigations revealed that although the Zilla Panchayat had conducted a pre-academic survey that identified 628 unsafe school structures across Bagalkote district, the engineers failed to evaluate or report the structural vulnerabilities at the Mugaloli Tanda campus. Furthermore, school administrators had not formally notified higher authorities about the urgent need for structural repairs. This enforcement action underscores heightened scrutiny regarding public school safety across Bagalkote taluk. Local residents and parents have demanded immediate safety audits for all rural government schools in the region to guarantee safe learning environments for children.
