₹40-Crore Cable Car Project Nears Takeoff at Gokak Falls in Belagavi

A long-pending demand to boost tourism in Gokak taluk of Belagavi district is moving closer to reality as the proposed ₹40-crore cable car project at Gokak Falls nears final state government clearance. The proposal, which has already received financial approval from the Karnataka Finance Department, is currently awaiting cabinet clearance. State Tourism Minister K.J. George has directed officials to expedite statutory clearances from the forest and environment departments so that global tenders can be invited under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. A technical and environmental feasibility study conducted by Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) affirmed the viability of the cable car route across the Ghataprabha River gorge. Often referred to as the 'Niagara of Karnataka', the 52-metre-high Gokak Falls plunges into a 171-foot-deep gorge, drawing thousands of tourists annually. With the historic British-era suspension bridge remaining closed for safety reasons, the cable car will provide a safe aerial view for visitors. Belagavi Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan stated that the project will strengthen tourism infrastructure, generate employment for local youth, and boost commercial activities across Gokak taluk.
