Karnataka Energy and Tourism Minister K.J. George inspected the Tannirbhavi Blue Flag Beach in Mangaluru on September 6, 2026, to assess current visitor amenities and review plans for coastal tourism development. Addressing reporters, the minister emphasised that the state government aims to prioritize the comprehensive development of existing certified Blue Flag beaches rather than opening new ones without proper facilities.
Accompanied by Tourism Department officials, Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V., and local representatives, Minister George reviewed the cleanliness standards, beach shacks, sanitation, and safety infrastructure at Tannirbhavi. He noted that key challenges to coastal development, including Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms, are being actively examined to enable better road access, standardised beach shacks, and improved civic amenities without compromising environmental norms.
The government is also studying preliminary proposals for cruise tourism connecting Mangaluru with Goa, Kerala-style houseboat operations, and riverfront development along the Netravati river. The tourism department's detailed master plan will be presented during an upcoming Karnataka Cabinet meeting scheduled to take place in Mangaluru.
