Bengaluru Blue Line Metro Trials Set for October, ORR Redevelopment Underway

Bengaluru is poised for a significant upgrade in its public transportation and road infrastructure as the Metro Blue Line prepares for trial runs by October 2026. The Greater Bengaluru Development Minister, Krishna Byre Gowda, has directed the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to prioritize these timelines, targeting commercial operations for 2027. This Blue Line, a crucial component of the Namma Metro network, extends 58.19 km, connecting key areas such as KR Puram, Central Silk Board, Hennur, Hebbal, and Kempegowda International Airport. While the project was initially slated for completion in 2024, delays have pushed the schedule. In parallel with the metro development, the state government has allocated ₹450 crore for the comprehensive redevelopment of a 17.01-km stretch of the Outer Ring Road (ORR) between KR Puram and Central Silk Board. This ambitious project aims to transform the ORR into a 'model mobility corridor' by addressing decades of unplanned urban expansion that has led to severe traffic congestion. The redevelopment plan includes widening footpaths to ten feet, remodelling complex traffic junctions, and integrating pedestrian bridges with cycle tracks and bus bays. Furthermore, the project emphasizes durable white-topped roads designed for a 25-year lifespan, improved stormwater drains, and coordinated utility works. Public consultations are actively being sought to incorporate citizen suggestions into the final design, reflecting a commitment to inclusive urban planning. An annuity payment model will also be implemented, requiring contractors to maintain the roads for 10-12 years, ensuring sustained quality and accountability.
