Bengaluru Metro Blue Line Delay Threatens Major Traffic Chaos as ORR Roadwork Looms

Bengaluru's vital Blue Line Metro corridor, stretching approximately 19 kilometers from Silk Board to KR Pura, is now projected to commence commercial operations only in early 2027, a significant setback from its initial target of late 2026. This delay is attributed to various factors including incomplete civil and systems work, technical and site-specific challenges at several stations (such as Iblur, affected by high-pressure gas pipelines), and ongoing land acquisition issues. Compounding this challenge, the Greater Bengaluru Authority is simultaneously planning a substantial ₹450 crore white-topping project along the highly congested Outer Ring Road (ORR). This roadwork is slated to begin in October 2026 and continue until January 2027. The ORR is a crucial artery for the city, particularly for the information technology sector, with an estimated 8 to 10 lakh people commuting along this corridor daily. Industry bodies, notably the Outer Ring Road Companies Association (ORRCA), representing over 500 companies, have expressed deep concern and urged the state government to postpone the white-topping project until the Metro's Blue Line is fully operational. They argue that simultaneous major infrastructure works will exacerbate Bengaluru's already severe traffic woes, which regularly see traffic queues stretching up to 13.5 kilometers during peak hours. While the government has suggested a 50% work-from-home option for companies during the road construction period, businesses maintain that the Metro's completion should be prioritized to provide a viable alternative before undertaking such disruptive road improvements. This situation underscores the critical need for better coordination in urban planning to mitigate impacts on daily life and the city's economy.
