Columbia University to Develop AI-Powered Maternal-Fetal Monitoring System with ARPA-H Funding

Columbia University is set to lead a transformative initiative in maternal and fetal healthcare, backed by a significant Phase I award of up to $5 million from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H). The funding will support the development of HARMONI, an innovative AI-powered wearable monitoring system designed to provide clinicians with continuous and objective insights into the health of both mother and baby throughout the labor process. This project is a cornerstone of ARPA-H's "Making Obstetrics Care Smart (MOCS)" program, a four-year, $90.7 million endeavor committed to establishing the United States as the safest place globally for childbirth. The current standard of fetal monitoring, largely unchanged since the 1970s, relies heavily on fetal heart rate tracings that often prove difficult to interpret consistently, leading to uncertainties in critical moments. Despite the U.S. spending more on maternal care than any other high-income country, maternal and neonatal outcomes remain suboptimal. HARMONI seeks to address these deficiencies by combining a wireless abdominal smart belt with a companion ear-worn sensor. This integrated system will leverage advanced AI algorithms to deliver real-time data, offering a more accurate assessment of fetal oxygen levels and overall maternal well-being. By integrating intelligent sensing and real-time clinical decision support, the technology aims to reduce the incidence of unnecessary cesarean sections and prevent complications arising from undiagnosed low oxygen levels in infants. The successful deployment of HARMONI could fundamentally reshape obstetric care, offering both medical professionals and expecting families greater confidence and improved outcomes during delivery.
