Dakshina Kannada Leads Karnataka in Crop Insurance Enrollment for Arecanut and Pepper

Dakshina Kannada district has emerged as the leading performer in Karnataka under the weather-based crop insurance scheme, specifically for arecanut and pepper cultivation. For the 2024-25 period, the district successfully processed an impressive 3,32,752 proposals, with a near-perfect settlement rate, as only two proposals remain pending due to minor administrative issues like Aadhaar-bank account linkage and KYC discrepancies. The total insured area covered stands at 75,899.52 hectares, comprising 55,637.96 hectares for arecanut and 20,261.56 hectares for pepper. This scheme has played a crucial role in providing financial security to farmers, distributing claims amounting to approximately Rs 276 crore. Of this, Rs 254.3 crore was allocated for arecanut and Rs 21.6 crore for pepper. Farmers contributed Rs 40.3 crore towards the premium, while the Union government and the Karnataka government collectively contributed Rs 80.7 crore and Rs 156.7 crore, respectively, leading to a total premium pool of Rs 277.8 crore. The success of the scheme in Dakshina Kannada is attributed to its efficient mechanism, where compensation is determined using scientific weather parameters such as rainfall, temperature, and humidity, provided by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC). This streamlined process ensures that farmers receive timely and fair compensation, safeguarding them against unexpected weather-related crop losses and promoting agricultural stability in the region.
