Dakshina Kannada district has achieved a remarkable feat by leading Karnataka in the weather-based crop insurance scheme for arecanut and pepper during the 2024-25 agricultural year. Official data reveals that the district processed an impressive 3,32,752 proposals, with 3,32,750 of them successfully cleared, indicating a near-perfect settlement rate. Only two proposals encountered minor delays due to Aadhaar-bank account linkage and Know Your Customer (KYC) issues. The total insured area under the scheme spanned 75,899.52 hectares, encompassing 55,637.96 hectares for arecanut across 2,42,550 proposals, and 20,261.56 hectares for pepper from 90,200 proposals.
The scheme proved highly beneficial to farmers, with approximately Rs 276 crore disbursed as claims. This includes Rs 254.3 crore for arecanut and Rs 21.6 crore for pepper growers. Farmers contributed Rs 40.3 crore towards the premium, while the Union and Karnataka governments significantly subsidized the scheme by contributing Rs 80.7 crore and Rs 156.7 crore, respectively, bringing the total premium pool to Rs 277.8 crore. Compensation under the scheme is determined by analyzing weather parameters such as rainfall, temperature, and humidity, provided by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), against the policy conditions. Farmers pay a one-time premium of around Rs 6,400 per hectare for arecanut and Rs 2,350 per hectare for pepper. The success of the previous year, marked by significant rainfall deviations, resulted in payouts to almost all eligible applicants, reinforcing farmers' trust in the program. The application deadline for the current season has been extended to August 17, with expectations that enrolment could reach between 3.5 lakh to 4 lakh proposals, further solidifying Dakshina Kannada's position as a leader in agricultural risk management.
