Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison witnessed a major security incident on September 2, 2026, when five undertrial prisoners allegedly assaulted a jail warder and attempted to strangle him. Following a complaint lodged by the in-charge superintendent of the central prison, the Parappana Agrahara police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the five accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including Section 109 (attempt to murder) and Section 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from duty).
The victim, identified as 32-year-old jail warder Manjunath Haveli, had gone to Annex-1 of the prison facility around 10:05 AM to gather information regarding an inmate for an upcoming review committee meeting. One of the accused, Mohammad Muzammil, confronted Haveli regarding a previous dispute on August 22, when the warder had intercepted and prevented unauthorized items from being brought inside during a security transfer. Muzammil allegedly verbally abused and punched Haveli in the face, causing bleeding injuries. Four other undertrials—Abdul Shafwan, Mohammad Rizwan, Niyaz, and Kalandar Shafi—then joined the attack, forcibly dragging the warder into a cell where they repeatedly assaulted him and attempted to suffocate him by tightly squeezing his neck.
Nearby prison staff noticed the violent altercation and intervened to rescue the injured warder. All five accused are undertrial prisoners lodged in the Bengaluru Central Prison in connection with a 2025 murder case. Senior police officials confirmed that investigators will seek court permission to take the five inmates into police custody for detailed interrogation. The incident has once again highlighted security challenges and inmate indiscipline within Karnataka's premier correctional institution.
