Upa Lokayukta Registers Case Against Mandya Prison and Hospital Officials Over Special Privileges to Inmate

The Karnataka Upa Lokayukta has registered a suo motu case against 10 government employees, including senior officials of Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) Hospital and Mandya District Prison, following allegations of unauthorized hospital stays and special privileges provided to a remand prisoner. The action was initiated by Upa Lokayukta Justice B. Veerappa following an inspection conducted by a district sessions judge. The inmate, Mohammad Hussain—a former Assistant Director of Land Records (ADLR) who was arrested in August in connection with a fake document racket—was allegedly admitted as an in-patient at MIMS Hospital without obtaining permission from the trial court. During an unannounced inspection, the sessions judge found the accused residing in a private hospital room accompanied by a visitor, raising serious concerns over security lapses and procedural violations. The case names senior medical officers, former and present prison superintendents, and police constables attached to District Armed Reserve (DAR). Upa Lokayukta has summoned all 10 respondents to appear for a formal hearing on October 28 with relevant records. The probe also follows allegations made by undertrials regarding corruption and preferential treatment inside the prison facility in exchange for bribes.
