Government Amends E-Commerce Rules 2026 to Tighten Consumer Grievance Standards and Fair Trade Compliance

The Department of Consumer Affairs under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has notified the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) (Amendment) Rules, 2026, aimed at modernising digital trade standards and enhancing consumer rights protection. The updated framework addresses critical challenges in online marketplaces, including non-transparent sponsored listings, dark patterns, and search result manipulation that mislead online shoppers. Under the new regulatory mandates, all e-commerce entities operating in India must partner in the convergence process of the National Consumer Helpline (NCH) to streamline digital grievance redressal. The rules require online platforms to provide clear receipts of complaints registered with their grievance officers, display original prior lower prices alongside slashed promotional rates, and highlight sponsored product listings prominently. Furthermore, the regulations curb unfair trade practices by forbidding platforms from altering search algorithm outputs to favour preferred sellers or deceptively steer consumer choices. Set to take full effect from January 1, 2027, the policy seeks to strike a balanced regulatory approach that safeguards consumer interests without creating unnecessary operational friction for digital market enterprises across the country.
