In a significant move to bolster technological collaboration, India and Japan have issued a joint statement affirming their commitment to elevated cooperation in the field of Artificial Intelligence. This strategic partnership, highlighted in a press release by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), aims to build a safe, secure, trustworthy, inclusive, human-centric, sustainable, accountable, and innovation-oriented AI ecosystem. Recognizing AI as an era-defining technology, both nations emphasize the long-term implications of current choices in its design, development, deployment, and governance on innovation, social welfare, economic security, and the international order.
The cooperation will focus on mutually enhancing the resilience and competitiveness of both countries in AI, driving innovation and growth. A crucial aspect of this collaboration involves strengthening secure digital infrastructure for AI, encompassing data centers, Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and other compute resources, and semiconductors. The two nations will also jointly assess potential opportunities and vulnerabilities across the entire AI technology stack from an economic-security perspective. This initiative is aligned with broader efforts to build resilient and growth-oriented economic ecosystems, including Japan’s updated 'Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)' strategy. The joint statement also welcomed discussions from the first India and Japan AI Strategic Dialogue held in April 2026, indicating ongoing efforts to deepen this technological alliance.
Furthermore, India and Japan have decided to become strategic research and development partners in AI, committing to fostering collaboration between government, industry, and academia on multilingual, open-source, domain-specific, and vertical AI models, particularly for native languages and public interest applications. This includes signing memorandums of understanding (MOUs) for joint research in large language models and broader AI technology stacks, reinforcing their shared vision for responsible and innovative AI deployment.
