India Outlines Vision for Advanced Digital Public Infrastructure and AI-Powered Future

The Government of India, through a recent official release, has detailed its ambitious roadmap for transforming the nation into a leading global technology power, focusing on critical advancements in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and semiconductor manufacturing. This strategic vision, central to the 'Viksit Bharat 2047' initiative, highlights India's progression from a significant digital consumer market to a key innovator and developer of advanced technologies. Over the past decade, substantial government investments have been channeled into strengthening digital infrastructure, leading to a remarkable expansion of optical fiber networks and achieving one of the world's fastest 5G rollouts, now covering nearly all districts. These foundational improvements have dramatically increased internet penetration and broadband access, connecting a vast population to the digital economy. Furthermore, the government has emphasized its commitment to fostering an indigenous AI ecosystem, backed by the 'IndiaAI Mission' with an allocation exceeding ₹10,300 crore. This mission is designed to build advanced AI computing infrastructure, facilitate access to high-end GPU facilities, and promote research, startup growth, skill development, and public service innovation. Alongside this, the 'Semicon India Programme,' launched in 2021 with ₹76,000 crore, aims to establish a robust semiconductor ecosystem covering manufacturing, design, packaging, and talent development. These coordinated efforts underscore India's determination to achieve technological sovereignty and enhance its global credibility as a reliable technology partner, laying a strong foundation for future economic growth and self-reliance. The policy direction ensures safe, inclusive, and responsible AI systems while integrating India with global supply chains.
