India's Q1 GDP Growth Accelerates to 7.8%, Beating Expectations Driven by Strong Manufacturing and Services

India's real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 7.8% in the first quarter (April–June) of the financial year 2026–27, according to official data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). The growth rate surpassed the Reserve Bank of India’s projection of 7.0%, highlighting the continued resilience of the domestic economy amid global geopolitical tensions and energy market volatility. The strong economic expansion was largely driven by vibrant activity in the secondary and tertiary sectors. Manufacturing sector Gross Value Added (GVA) grew by 9.2%, up from 8.3% in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, while the services sector recorded a 10% expansion. Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF), a vital measure of private and public investment, surged by 11.9%, pointing to sustained momentum in capital expenditure and industrial development. Private final consumption expenditure also maintained steady growth at 7.1%. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the performance as a significant achievement, attributing the strong output to the collective effort of citizens and domestic demand. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized that structural economic reforms and agile macroeconomic management continue to yield positive results. Addressing questions raised regarding methodology and deflator calculations, MoSPI released detailed clarifications confirming that standard double-deflation procedures aligned with international statistical standards were utilized. Economic analysts observe that this strong first-quarter performance reinforces India's position as one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world.
