Karnataka Aims for Global AI Leadership with First AI University and $153 Billion Startup Ecosystem Focus

Karnataka is setting an ambitious course to lead the global artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, underpinned by a significant push towards deep-tech innovation and startup growth. The state government has unveiled a comprehensive strategy that includes establishing India's first government-driven AI University in Bengaluru, complete with a sprawling 100-acre campus and regional centers across Karnataka. This initiative is part of a broader vision to train up to two lakh people in AI and foster the creation of 25,000 new startups, leveraging the state's existing $153 billion startup ecosystem. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has emphasized Karnataka's commitment to becoming a global hub for deep-technology research and commercialization, focusing on the convergence of AI, nanotechnology, biotechnology, quantum technologies, and semiconductors. The state is actively seeking collaborations, including discussions with AI firm Anthropic, to develop AI-enabled citizen services, enhance governance, and accelerate scientific research. A "Government First" approach ensures data sovereignty and privacy, while also exploring secure ways to open public datasets for startups, researchers, and academic institutions to develop solutions in various sectors like healthcare, mobility, and agriculture. Furthermore, a new 'Startup Policy' is expected to broaden opportunities beyond Bengaluru, supporting additional startups and strengthening the overall innovation landscape. This strategic focus aims to link economic scale with institutional accountability, positioning AI not just as a tool for administration but as a means to reduce fraud, secure examinations, protect data, improve public services, and expand opportunities across the state.
