Karnataka Establishes Urban Mobility Mission Committee to Address Bengaluru's Traffic Challenges

In a significant move to alleviate Bengaluru's persistent traffic congestion and enhance urban mobility, the Karnataka government has established the Urban Mobility Mission Committee for Bengaluru (UMMCB). Chaired by Home Minister Priyank Kharge, the committee aims to foster a unified approach by bringing together a diverse array of stakeholders, including various government departments, private mobility service providers, technology companies, academic experts, and citizen representatives. This initiative seeks to move beyond isolated departmental efforts, creating a collaborative platform to develop comprehensive, integrated, and technology-driven solutions for the city's complex mobility challenges. Bengaluru, often dubbed India's "Silicon Valley," has been grappling with worsening traffic congestion, extended commute times, inadequate first- and last-mile connectivity, and uncoordinated public transport systems. These issues severely impact the city's productivity, economic efficiency, and the quality of life for its residents. The UMMCB will focus on strategic areas such as traffic management and road safety, public transport integration, improving last-mile connectivity, leveraging digital mobility and data, and coordinating urban freight and infrastructure projects. By integrating public and private sector insights, the committee plans to formulate a unified Bengaluru Mobility Action Plan and establish a data-sharing system to inform interventions. Regular progress reports will be submitted every three months, ensuring continuous monitoring and adaptation to effectively address Bengaluru's pressing urban transport needs.
