The Indian Ministry of Defence, through its Department of Defence Production (DDP), announced the sixth Positive Indigenisation List (PIL) on August 18, 2026. This comprehensive list includes 405 strategically important defence items, marking a significant step towards achieving self-reliance in the defence sector under the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative. The items, which encompass line replaceable units, sub-systems, sub-assemblies, spares, components, and raw materials, hold an estimated business potential of ₹3,070 crore for Indian industries.
The new list categorises 16 items for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and 389 for Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs). These items are crucial for a wide array of defence platforms and systems, including advanced light helicopters, light utility helicopters, Su-30MKI fighter jets, light combat aircraft, AL-31FP engines, T-72, T-90, and BMP-II armoured platforms, warships, and various missile systems like Konkurs-M, Invar, and MRSAM. Additionally, defence electronics such as radars, sonars, fire control systems, satellite communication systems, and high-explosive anti-tank ammunition are covered.
Each item on the list has an indicative timeline for indigenisation. Once successfully developed domestically, these items will be exclusively procured from Indian industries, thereby reducing dependence on foreign imports. The DPSUs and ICG are mandated to pursue indigenisation through various mechanisms, including their 'Make' procedures and in-house development, with a strong emphasis on involving domestic industries, particularly Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This initiative is expected to foster investment, innovation, and a robust domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem, further contributing to India's economic growth and strategic autonomy.
