RBI Rejects Tata Sons' Request to Surrender NBFC License, Directs Holding Company to Go Public

In a landmark regulatory ruling, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has rejected Tata Sons' application to surrender its Core Investment Company (CIC) registration, paving the way for the conglomerate's main holding company to list on Indian stock exchanges. In an official communication delivered on September 11, 2026, the central bank informed Tata Sons that its request for voluntary deregistration could not be acceded to. The RBI directed the company to ensure complete compliance with the regulatory framework governing Upper Layer Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFC-UL), which includes mandatory public listing.
