South Korea Launches Major Initiative to Convert Livestock Manure into Renewable Energy

South Korea has embarked on an ambitious five-year national program, committing 29.8 billion won (approximately $22 million USD) to pioneer technologies that transform livestock manure into solid biomass fuel. This significant investment, formally launched on July 28, 2026, by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, addresses pressing environmental concerns while bolstering the nation's energy independence. The initiative seeks to mitigate water pollution caused by nutrient runoff from traditional manure disposal and reduce the country's reliance on imported wood-based fuels. The comprehensive program focuses on several key technological advancements. Researchers will develop standardized quality management systems for cattle manure and other agricultural byproducts, which are the primary feedstocks. A crucial aspect involves creating more energy-efficient fermentation and drying processes, including innovative low-energy manure drying technology. The goal is to produce high-calorific-value solid biomass fuel that can be directly utilized in agricultural boilers without the need for compression or pelletizing, thereby simplifying production and reducing costs. Demonstration projects will test this fuel in both commercial power plants and dedicated combined heat and power boilers. Furthermore, the initiative is underpinned by recent regulatory relaxations, effective July 30, 2026, which allow for the mixing of manure with up to 40% auxiliary materials like rice husks or sawdust and remove the mandatory pelletizing requirement, making the conversion process more flexible and commercially viable.
