Switzerland Joins EU Sanctions to Ban Imports and Trade of Sudanese Gold

On September 9, 2026, the Swiss Federal Council formally adopted measures aligning Switzerland with European Union sanctions prohibiting the trade and import of gold originating in Sudan. Under the new regulations, which took effect on September 10, the purchase, import, and transit of Sudanese gold are strictly banned across Swiss territory. Additionally, the export and supply of essential chemicals and equipment used in gold mining and extraction to Sudan have been prohibited. The Federal Council expressed grave concern over the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan, highlighting that gold serves as a vital conflict resource funding warring military factions. By integrating these measures into the existing Swiss Ordinance on Sudan, Bern aims to prevent conflict minerals from entering international supply chains and financial markets. Switzerland has enforced United Nations sanctions against Sudan since 2005 and added bilateral EU restrictions in 2023. This move reinforces global diplomatic efforts to starve military groups of financial resources, protect vulnerable populations, and uphold international humanitarian standards.
