UN Chief António Guterres to Advocate Multipolarity and UN Security Council Reform at 18th BRICS Summit

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is scheduled to attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi from September 12 to 13, 2026, where he will press for comprehensive reforms to multilateral institutions, including the UN Security Council and Bretton Woods systems. Addressing reporters at the UN headquarters, spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric announced that Guterres has been invited to speak at the summit's open session on September 13 under the theme "Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth". During his address, the UN chief is expected to emphasize that today's geopolitical, demographic, and economic realities differ significantly from those of 1945, when the UN was created. He will argue that emerging economies and the Global South, represented prominently within the expanding BRICS bloc, must have a proportional voice in global decision-making bodies. Guterres will highlight that a multipolar world order can restore balance to global governance, but only if fundamental reforms are enacted to address modern structural imbalances. The call for UN Security Council reform aligns with longstanding demands by India and several other nations advocating for permanent representation on the 15-member council. In addition to his formal address, Guterres is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other visiting international leaders during his visit to New Delhi.
