Union Home Minister Amit Shah Addresses 52nd India Gems and Jewellery Awards, Urges Indian Leadership in Lab-Grown Diamonds

Addressing the 52nd India Gems and Jewellery Awards ceremony in Mumbai on September 13, 2026, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah called upon the gems and jewellery industry to ensure that the entire ecosystem and manufacturing value chain of lab-grown diamonds (LGDs) remain firmly under Indian control. The event was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and other key dignitaries. Shah emphasized that with the global lab-grown diamond market expected to expand nearly 50 times in volume, Indian businesses have an extraordinary opportunity to build global brands and control everything from machinery production to retail showrooms. Highlighting India's current strength, Shah noted that Surat cuts and polishes nine out of every ten diamonds worldwide, generating millions of jobs and driving national exports. To support this growth, the Union government is formulating policies and expanding infrastructure, including a ₹50,000 crore investment in the India Jewellery Park and the development of a gems bourse in Jaipur. Shah reassured industry leaders that the government remains committed to providing all necessary policy support to establish India as a pioneering global hub for lab-grown and traditional jewellery exports.
