Union Minister Bhupender Yadav Inaugurates National Workshop on Advanced Technologies for Forest and Tree Assessment

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav inaugurated a national workshop titled "Leveraging Latest Technologies in Assessment of Forest and Tree Resources" in New Delhi on September 10, 2026. Organised by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in association with the Forest Survey of India (FSI), the workshop brought together officials from State Forest Departments, scientific institutions, remote sensing experts, and environmental researchers to modernize resource monitoring. Addressing the gathering, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav emphasized that adopting cutting-edge technologies while strengthening indigenous scientific capabilities and field staff training is vital for sustainable forest management. The workshop structured three dedicated technical sessions focusing on the digitization of forest boundaries, precision assessment of forest and tree cover, and accurate estimation of national carbon stock. The initiative directly supports India’s climate commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), specifically the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target to create an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent through tree and forest cover by 2030, with enhanced long-term goals aiming for 3.5 to 4 billion tonnes by 2035. The Minister called for standardized operating procedures and high-quality field data integration to refine the biennial India State of Forest Report (ISFR), ensuring that future policy decisions are backed by transparent, technology-driven data.
