United Kingdom Imposes Sweeping New Sectoral Sanctions on Iran Over Nuclear Program Escalation

The United Kingdom government laid 'The Iran (Sanctions) (Amendment) Regulations 2026' before Parliament on September 8, 2026, enacting a fresh wave of rigorous sectoral sanctions against Iran. The new measures target key pillars of the Iranian economy, including energy, petrochemicals, metals, gold, aviation, maritime shipping, and banking, aiming to restrict Tehran's access to British financial systems and international services. In a written statement to Parliament, UK Minister of State Stephen Doughty explained that the decision follows Iran's unchecked nuclear expansion and lack of transparency. Official reports indicate that Iran has accumulated over 400 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% purity, making it the only non-nuclear weapon state possessing nuclear material enriched to such elevated levels without a credible civilian purpose. The newly introduced legislation reimposes sectoral restrictions that were originally lifted under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), following the UN sanctions snapback implemented in late 2025. Set to take full effect on September 29, 2026, the law also expands the UK government's statutory powers to seize or prohibit Iranian-linked vessels from operating in British waters and bars Iranian aircraft from landing at UK airports, signaling a significant diplomatic escalation.
