US Health Agency ARPA-H Announces $98.5M Awards for AI Rare Disease Diagnostics

The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, published an official press release announcing contract awards totaling up to $98.5 million over 4.5 years under its Rare Disease AI/ML for Precision Integrated Diagnostics (RAPID) program. The landmark initiative aims to leverage advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to drastically shorten the timeline required to diagnose rare and ultra-rare health conditions. Globally, more than 350 million individuals live with over 10,000 rare diseases, but patients frequently endure a 'diagnostic odyssey' lasting six years or more before receiving an accurate assessment. Delayed diagnoses often lead to inappropriate medical care, irreversible disease progression, and soaring healthcare expenses. Under the RAPID initiative, selected research teams—including Chapel Hill, Sage Bionetworks, and Probably Genetic—will develop interoperable clinical decision support tools and build a centralized 'Rare Disease Data Commons.' These tools will integrate complex longitudinal patient data, enabling clinicians in community settings to detect subtle disease patterns earlier and accelerating the development of targeted therapies.
