Applied Materials and Lam Research Announce Major $6 Billion Semiconductor Investments in India

In a major boost to India's semiconductor ecosystem, global chipmaking equipment giants Applied Materials and Lam Research announced commitments totaling over $6 billion during the SEMICON India 2026 summit. Applied Materials unveiled its 'India Vision 2035' initiative, committing $5 billion over the next decade to build a 140-acre Advanced Semiconductor Research Park near Bengaluru. The state-of-the-art facility will feature 300mm wafer cleanroom capabilities, advanced engineering expertise, and collaborative research and development labs with global customers and suppliers. Additionally, the firm aims to scale its India-based supply chain capacity tenfold to support semiconductor fabrication facilities worldwide. Simultaneously, U.S.-based Lam Research Corporation announced plans to invest approximately ₹10,000 crore ($1.04 billion) in India over the coming years. The investment will establish Lam Research's first silicon component manufacturing plant in the country, alongside a major expansion of its advanced R&D operations in Bengaluru. The proposed plant will focus on vertically integrated silicon manufacturing processes, including silicon ingot processing essential for leading-edge chip nodes. These major announcements align with the Government of India's Semicon 2.0 policy, which carries an outlay of ₹1,27,500 crore to expand chip design, materials manufacturing, and packaging capabilities. The substantial investments reinforce Bengaluru's position as a premier global hub for deep-tech research, chip equipment engineering, and advanced hardware innovation.
