BCCI Names Shreyas Iyer Captain as India Announces T20 Squad for Afghanistan Series and Asian Games

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced a 15-member men's T20 squad led by Shreyas Iyer for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, scheduled to take place in New Delhi from September 13 to 17. Young batsman Tilak Varma has been appointed as vice-captain. The same 15-member squad will also represent India at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, where cricket is featured in the T20 format from late September. Among the prominent inclusions in the squad is 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who impressed with a stellar run during India's T20I series in Zimbabwe earlier this year and in domestic red-ball tournaments. Rajasthan Royals leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi also makes a return to the national squad. The selection reflects a balanced mix of promising young talent and experienced players. All three T20Is against Afghanistan will be held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Afghanistan will act as the designated home side for the series despite playing in India. Following the series, the Indian squad will fly to Japan to defend their continental crown at the Asian Games, providing valuable exposure for the national team's secondary T20 core.
