Bengaluru Police Proposes Major Overhaul with Five Commissionerates

Bengaluru Police has put forward a comprehensive proposal to reorganize its administrative structure by dividing the current single police commissionerate into five distinct regional commissionerates: Central, North, South, East, and West. This significant move is aimed at addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by Bengaluru's rapid urban expansion, burgeoning population, and the escalating rates of conventional crime and cybercrime. The existing policing model, which operates under a single commissionerate, is deemed insufficient to effectively cater to the city's dynamic and growing demands. The proposed restructuring is envisioned to align police jurisdictions more closely with the recently established five municipal corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), thereby fostering better coordination between civic administration and law enforcement agencies. The ambitious plan entails the creation of 6,633 new police posts across various ranks to adequately staff the new commissionerates and bolster the overall police presence. The financial outlay for this overhaul is projected to be approximately Rs 765 crore. While many retired police officials acknowledge the necessity of such a decentralization given Bengaluru's vastness, there is ongoing debate regarding the specific governance model, particularly the introduction of a Chief Commissioner of Police position above the five regional commissioners. Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge has indicated that the proposal is currently at a conceptual stage and is undergoing detailed examination by the Home Department under the direction of Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who seeks more effective and efficient policing measures for the city.
