Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project Sees Land Acquisition Progress in One Corridor Amidst Overall Delays

The ambitious ₹15,767-crore Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP), crucial for enhancing the city's public transport infrastructure, continues to face land acquisition hurdles, with only one of its four corridors successfully completing the process. According to a recent reply by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in the Lok Sabha on August 5, 2026, Corridor-2 (Mallige), stretching 25.01 km between Baiyyappanahalli and Chikkabanavara, has made the most significant headway. Land acquisition for this corridor is complete, and separate contracts have been awarded for station buildings, with construction currently underway. Tenders for remaining works have also been invited, indicating tangible progress. The 148.17-km BSRP, being executed by Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited (K-RIDE)—a joint venture with the Karnataka government holding a 51% stake—is funded by 20% contributions each from the Centre and the State, with the remaining 60% to be raised through debt. While Corridor-2 shows promise, the other three corridors—Corridor-1 (Sampige), Corridor-3 (Parijaata), and Corridor-4 (Kanaka)—are still in various stages of land acquisition and utility shifting. The project, approved over four years ago, has incurred an expenditure of ₹2,659 crore to date. The delays are primarily attributed to pending land acquisition and the transfer of State government land, posing a challenge to the timely completion of this vital urban development initiative. The progress on Corridor-2 offers a positive outlook for parts of the project, highlighting sustained efforts despite systemic obstacles.
