Google Unveils €13 Billion AI Infrastructure Expansion in Finland Supported by Nuclear Power

Alphabet’s Google announced on September 9, 2026, a massive €13 billion ($15.1 billion) investment in digital and artificial intelligence infrastructure across Finland for 2027 and 2028. Marking the tech giant's single largest investment in Europe to date, the initiative includes expanding its flagship data center facility in Hamina alongside setting up new infrastructure hubs in Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala. According to economic assessments, the project is projected to contribute an annual average of €3.6 billion to Finland's gross domestic product during the construction phase and support over 7,000 operational jobs upon completion. To meet the immense energy demands of running advanced AI workloads like Gemini, Search, and Cloud services sustainably, Google simultaneously secured its first nuclear power purchase agreement outside the United States. Google signed a 22-year power purchase agreement with Finnish state-controlled energy producer Fortum. Under the terms, Google will purchase up to 50 percent of the generation capacity of the Loviisa nuclear power plant through 2050. The long-term deal guarantees clean baseload electricity for Google's expanding server network while funding vital life-extension modernizations for the nuclear facility.
