Grand Vitla Pindi Festivities Draw Thousands of Devotees to Udupi Car Street

The temple town of Udupi erupted in vibrant devotion and traditional splendour on September 5, 2026, as thousands of devotees gathered at Car Street to celebrate Sri Krishna Leelotsava, locally known as Vitla Pindi. The grand festivities marked the high point of the two-day Sri Krishna Janmashtami celebrations organized by the Paryaya Sri Shiroor Math and Sri Krishna Math. The highlights of the event began around 3:00 PM when the clay idol of Lord Krishna was placed on the magnificent golden chariot and taken in procession around Car Street. Paryaya Sri Shiroor Math seer, Sri Vedavardhana Theertha Swamiji, ceremonially flagged off the procession in the presence of other seers and religious leaders. Young men dressed as 'gopalakas' (cowherds) delighted the crowd by climbing wooden scaffoldings (gopuras) erected along the route to break earthen pots filled with curd and turmeric water, recreating the playful childhood pastimes of Lord Krishna. The atmosphere was further electrified by traditional folk performances, including iconic 'Huli Vesha' (tiger dance) troupes, folk music, and cultural tableaus. Earlier in the day, mass feeding (annasantarpane) was arranged at the Math, serving prasadam to tens of thousands of pilgrims. Elaborate security and traffic arrangements were enforced by the Udupi police to ensure safety and smooth crowd management throughout the grand festival.
