India Accelerates Agritech Revolution with Advanced AI and Digital Infrastructure

India's agricultural landscape is undergoing a significant transformation driven by the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and a comprehensive digital public infrastructure. A recent Press Information Bureau (PIB) report highlights the nation's progress in establishing a robust digital foundation, including the creation of over 7.63 crore unique Farmer IDs and the surveying of 23.5 crore crop plots under the ambitious Digital Agriculture Mission. This extensive data forms the backbone for delivering targeted and efficient services to farmers across the country. Key technological interventions include the National Pest Surveillance System, which now supports 66 crops and monitors over 432 pest types, providing real-time advisories to more than 10,000 extension workers, enabling early detection and rapid response to pest outbreaks. Furthermore, the Kisan e-Mitra chatbot has become a vital tool, addressing over 93 lakh farmer queries to date, handling an impressive 8,000 inquiries daily in 11 regional languages, bridging critical information gaps. An AI-based pilot for local monsoon onset forecasting, implemented for the Kharif 2025 season, successfully reached 3.88 crore farmers across 13 states via SMS, influencing 31-52% of surveyed farmers to adjust their sowing and land preparation decisions. This demonstrates the tangible impact of AI in mitigating climate risks. Additionally, AI-enabled tools like YES-TECH, CROPIC, and the PMFBY WhatsApp Chatbot are making crop insurance under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) more innovative, faster, and transparent. The Union Budget 2026-27's proposal for Bharat-VISTAAR, a multilingual AI tool, further signals the government's commitment to integrating these digital advancements, cementing India's position as a global leader in AI competitiveness, currently ranking third worldwide.
