The Indian government is making significant strides in digital education through the comprehensive implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, particularly within Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The policy aims for the holistic development of students, promoting multidisciplinary approaches, imaginative and flexible curricula, and pedagogies that are experiential, inquiry-driven, and learner-centered. To achieve this, extensive efforts are underway to upgrade curricula, teaching methodologies, and digital infrastructure nationwide.
Central to these efforts are digital platforms such as SWAYAM, SWAYAM Prabha, e-PG Pathshala, and the UGC e-resource portal, which provide students with access to high-quality academic content. The recently launched SWAYAM Plus portal further enhances skill development, upskilling, and reskilling opportunities for the workforce. Additionally, the SAMARTH platform is integrating technology into the administrative functions of HEIs, streamlining processes from admissions to degree conferral. To bridge the digital divide in rural areas, the 'BharatNet' project, executed by BSNL, aims to provide broadband connectivity to all Government Secondary schools.
The push for digital and flexible learning is evident in the numbers: 126 HEIs currently offer approximately 802 Online Programmes, while 121 HEIs provide around 1,699 Open and Distance Learning (ODL) programmes. Furthermore, NEP 2020 emphasizes the integration of skill development and vocational education into mainstream higher education, crucial for enhancing employability and entrepreneurship. Financial provisions under the Samagra Shiksha scheme also support digital education initiatives in schools, demonstrating a holistic approach to transforming India's educational landscape through technology.
