The Indian government recently showcased significant advancements under its ambitious Digital India program, emphasizing a multi-pronged strategy to enhance the nation's digital landscape. A cornerstone of this strategy is the IndiaAI Mission, approved with a substantial outlay of ₹10,371.92 crore over five years, which aims to propel artificial intelligence research, foster indigenous AI model development, and establish India as a global AI innovation hub. This mission focuses on developing high-performance AI computing infrastructure, indigenous Large Language Models and foundation models, and AI applications for governance and public services, alongside skill development through programs like FutureSkills.
Beyond AI, the program prioritizes robust cybersecurity and data protection. The Digital Personal Data Protection framework, which provides for consent-based data processing and the establishment of a Data Protection Board, is being phased in over 18 months to safeguard citizens' privacy. Furthermore, Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) platforms like Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker, and e-Sanjeevani have revolutionized public service delivery, making welfare schemes, healthcare, and digital payments readily accessible to millions. UPI, in particular, now accounts for a majority of India's digital payment transactions, demonstrating the country's leadership in digital finance.
Digital connectivity has also seen remarkable expansion through initiatives like BharatNet, which has made over 2.21 lakh Gram Panchayats service-ready, extending high-speed internet to rural areas. This expansion, coupled with affordable data prices, has significantly increased internet subscribers to over 109 crore and telephone connections to over 133 crore, empowering citizens through digital literacy and improved access to technology. These comprehensive efforts underscore the government's commitment to building a secure, inclusive, and globally competitive digital ecosystem for long-term economic growth.
