India is experiencing a profound transformation in its digital landscape, marked by significant strides in both its digital infrastructure and electronics manufacturing capabilities. Recent reports highlight a seven-fold increase in electronics production, soaring from ₹1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to an impressive ₹13.11 lakh crore in 2025-26. This monumental growth is largely attributed to flagship government initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), and the Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC 2.0), all designed to bolster domestic manufacturing and foster self-reliance.
Furthermore, the nation is actively building a robust semiconductor ecosystem. The Union Cabinet's approval of Semicon 2.0, with an outlay of ₹1.27 lakh crore, signifies a strong commitment to this critical sector. Under ISM 1.0, 12 semiconductor units worth ₹1.64 lakh crore have been approved, with three already commencing commercial production and another unit expected to start operations this year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently reiterated this commitment, stating that India has begun production at three semiconductor plants, with plans for several more in the coming years, emphasizing the country's push for technological self-reliance.
Beyond manufacturing, Digital India initiatives continue to empower citizens. Aadhaar generation has remarkably increased to over 145 crore by July 2026, from 0.42 crore in 2010-11. Over 5.16 lakh Common Service Centres (CSCs) are now functional across India, providing essential Government-to-Citizen (G2C) e-services. The Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme, linked to Aadhaar, has facilitated the transfer of over ₹52 lakh crore across 318 schemes. Educational platforms like SWAYAM, SWAYAM Prabha, and PM e-Vidya are also expanding access to quality education, collectively showcasing India's comprehensive approach to digital empowerment and technological advancement. Additionally, programs like the 'Chips to Start-ups' (C2S) are strengthening India's semiconductor design ecosystem by training over 68,000 students and enabling 254 chip designs.
