Karnataka High Court Rejects Sentence Reduction Plea of Two Convicted Terror Operatives

The Karnataka High Court dismissed an appeal filed by two terror convicts seeking a reduction in their seven-year prison terms imposed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Indian Penal Code. A Division Bench comprising Justice H.P. Sandesh and Justice B. Pramod held that pleading guilty during court proceedings does not confer a statutory right upon convicts to claim the minimum prescribed punishment. The appellants, identified as Akthar Hussain Laskar and Abdul Aleem Mondal, were previously convicted by the Special Court for National Investigation Agency (NIA) cases in Bengaluru. They faced charges of criminal conspiracy, waging war against the nation, and related terrorism offences. The convicts had appealed to reduce their sentence to the statutory minimum of five years, contending that their voluntary admission of guilt saved judicial time by avoiding a full-length trial. Rejecting the plea, the High Court stressed that investigative material revealed a calculated conspiracy involving online radicalization and recruitment of vulnerable youth for proscribed terrorist organizations, including Al-Qaeda and Indian Mujahideen. The court highlighted evidence showing the convicts were active in encrypted groups and planning travel to Afghanistan via Kashmir and Pakistan. The ruling reinforces the judiciary's unyielding posture on national security and counter-terrorism enforcement.
