Karnataka Secures Major Share of Electronics Development Fund, Bolstering Bengaluru's Tech Ecosystem

Karnataka has solidified its position as a powerhouse in India's technology and startup landscape, securing a significant portion of the Central government's Electronics Development Fund (EDF). Out of 128 startups that received backing through the EDF's venture capital network, a remarkable 90 are based in Karnataka, predominantly within Bengaluru. This translates to roughly two-thirds of the total investment, with Karnataka-based firms attracting approximately ₹854.54 crore out of the ₹1,335.77 crore deployed by the eight 'daughter funds' supported by EDF as of June 30, 2026. Bengaluru alone accounted for 89 of these companies, comprising 56 in electronics manufacturing and 33 in information technology, while one company was situated in Belagavi. This substantial investment underscores Bengaluru's critical role as a hub for electronics and deep-tech innovation within India. The EDF, established as a 'fund of funds,' operates by the government investing in professionally managed, SEBI-registered venture funds, which then strategically deploy capital into promising technology companies. The supported startups were chosen based on rigorous criteria, including their innovation potential, capacity for indigenous technology development, ability to create intellectual property, the technical strength of their founding teams, and the commercial scalability of their business models. Collectively, these EDF-backed firms have successfully raised an additional ₹22,553.82 crore and have been instrumental in creating or acquiring 373 intellectual-property assets, further demonstrating the fund's impact on fostering a robust and innovative startup ecosystem. This development is a testament to Karnataka's conducive environment for technological advancement and entrepreneurial growth.
