A tragic incident reported from Holagundi village in Hoovina Hadagali taluk of Vijayanagara district has highlighted growing concerns over workplace stress in rural microfinance and self-help group organizations. On September 3, 2026, 43-year-old H. Kubendra Kumar, a supervisor working with the Shri Kshethra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP), was found dead by hanging at his rented residence in Holagundi. Kumar, originally a resident of Jagalur town in Davanagere district, had been serving in the Holagundi and Bhavihalli operational circles of Hoovina Hadagali taluk for the past three years.
According to reports, neighbours noticed the incident through a window after Kumar failed to emerge from his room upon returning from work and immediately alerted the Hoovina Hadagali police. Local police officials rushed to the spot, completed the initial site inspection, and shifted the body for an autopsy.
The victim's family members and local residents expressed immense grief and alleged that excessive loan recovery targets, financial collection stress, and persistent mental harassment by senior project managers were directly responsible for driving him to take the extreme step. They demanded a transparent legal inquiry and strict action against responsible officials. The Hoovina Hadagali police have registered a case and initiated a detailed investigation into the matter.
