Private Bank Employee Ends Life in Nyamathi Taluk Alleging Fraud and Extortion Over Promotion

A 37-year-old employee of IDFC First Bank, identified as Mohan Kumar, tragically died by suicide after jumping into the Upper Tunga Canal near Madanabhavi village in Nyamathi taluk of Davanagere district. Before taking the extreme step, the victim recorded a video message detailing the financial exploitation and psychological distress he was suffering under. According to the video message recorded by Mohan Kumar, bank colleague Thippeswamy and another individual named Kotresh allegedly extorted ₹50,000 from him under the pretext of arranging a promotion using a fake educational certificate. Mohan Kumar had reportedly taken loans to arrange the sum. When the promised promotion failed to materialize and debt mounted, he found himself in deep financial hardship. In the recording, he named both individuals as responsible for his condition and appealed to former minister M.P. Renukacharya for justice for his surviving family members. Local emergency personnel and firefighters subsequently recovered his motorcycle near the canal, and his body was later retrieved following an extensive search operation. The Nyamathi Police Station has registered a formal case regarding the incident and initiated a detailed investigation into the allegations of fraud and financial coercion. The incident has caused widespread sorrow across Nyamathi taluk, sparking conversations among local residents about workplace harassment and the need for safeguards for private bank workers.
